Renting a scooter or bike in the Andamans: a simple checklist
On Havelock, Neil and around Port Blair, a rented scooter or bike is a popular way to move between beaches. A short check at the start saves problems at the end. Find rental shops on the Explore page.
Before you pay
- Carry a valid driving licence and ask what documents the shop needs.
- Ask for the full price: per day, deposit, fuel policy, and any late fee.
- Ask what happens if the vehicle breaks down, and who to call.
- Ask about helmets. You should get one that fits.
Check the vehicle
- Test the brakes, lights, horn and indicators.
- Look at the tyres and ask when it was last serviced.
- Check how much fuel is in the tank and how the shop expects it back.
Take photos
Walk around the vehicle and photograph every scratch or dent, with the date visible on your phone. If there is a dispute later, you have proof of what was already there.
Riding on the islands
Island roads can be narrow and have sharp bends, loose sand or animals crossing. Ride slowly, avoid riding in the dark if you can, and ask the shop about places where the road is bad. Always wear the helmet.
When you return it
Return on time, point out any new problem yourself, and ask for the deposit back at the counter. Keep your receipt until the deposit is returned.
The phone number of each rental shop is on its page. Call to confirm availability, especially in busy months.
