How to choose a scuba diving operator in Havelock and Neil

Diving is one of the main reasons people visit Havelock and Neil, and there are many operators to choose from. Price matters, but safety and the quality of the briefing matter more. Use this checklist to compare shops before you book. You can find dive operators on the Explore page and call them directly.

Ask about instructors and certification

  • Are the instructors certified by a recognised training agency such as PADI or SSI?
  • Will a qualified instructor stay with you for the whole dive, especially on a first try dive?
  • What is the usual group size? Smaller groups usually mean more attention.

Check the briefing and the health form

A good operator explains hand signals, equalising your ears and what to do if something feels wrong, before you enter the water. They should also ask about your health. Be honest about asthma, heart conditions, ear problems, pregnancy or recent illness. If you are unsure, ask a doctor first.

Look at the equipment

Gear should look clean and well kept. Ask when equipment is serviced, and whether the boat carries first-aid and emergency oxygen.

Understand what the price includes

Ask whether the price includes equipment, boat transfer, photos or video, and any taxes or fees. Ask about the cancellation rule if the weather or sea is rough, because plans can change.

Plan around flying

If you fly soon after diving, ask your operator how long to wait. Follow their advice and your certification agency's guidance.

Booking tip

Call or message two or three operators, compare answers and trust the one that answers questions clearly and does not rush you. Listings on this site show the phone number so you can call the shop yourself.
